MECCA is positioned to Engage more Residents to create Inclusive Programs

(Detroit, MI) - MECCA Development Corporation has been selected as a Public Allies TSP Host Site for the first half of 2019. Four Allies (AmeriCorps members) will engage in an intensive capacity building project to help address a critical community need – youth development. The AmeriCorps program is a dynamic pipeline for talented young people to emerge as leaders and to strengthen the capacity of community organizations.

The community engagement process will highlight the current diversity within the community by giving {everyone} an opportunity to be involved with the planning process of improving their neighborhood. As residents are surveyed, the goal is to uplift the diversity (economically, socially, ethnically, etc.) within the community. “We believe varying experiences and thoughts create improved discussions and an inclusive community for all,” says Latisha Johnson, founder of MECCA Development Corporation. The feedback obtained will give the organization the ability to understand the wants and needs of residents as the city of Detroit convenes community meetings around the “strategic neighborhood funds” coming to the area.

This project will focus on a group of residents that are not usually included within community development - low-income families. Inclusive views will assist in obtaining grants, sponsorships, and corporate support to implement and sustain programs that are created as a result of the input provided. Engaging the community will encourage more residents to volunteer with the organization to effectively implement new programs as individuals are more vested when they are a part of the planning process.
